PHILIPS Infusis & Veriq

Overview

Veriq and Infusis are cutting-edge EMT tools designed for rapid hydration assessment and IV administration. Together, they enable EMTs to diagnose and rehydrate patients quickly and accurately in critical situations.

The Brief:

Design a device for a pressing emergency situation where your design reflects extensive research.

The events in the Middle East prompted me to look for gaps in design that haven’t been adequately explored.

Water is Disappearing

  • 117 million people faced acute water insecurity in 2023 due to conflicts and natural disasters.

  • Children, the elderly, and displaced populations are at the greatest risk of dehydration, especially when humanitarian aid is disrupted.

As climate change and global instability worsen, the ability to rapidly assess and treat dehydration is no longer optional—it’s lifesaving.

How is this currently tackled?

Visual Inspection:

EMTs look for signs like sunken eyes, dry mucus membranes, and lethargy

Blood Pressure Cuff:

Low blood pressure may indicate dehydration.

Pulse Oximeter:

Measures oxygen saturation and heart rate; elevated heart rate suggests dehydration.

Skin Turgor Test:

Delayed skin elasticity suggests dehydration.

Capillary Refill Test:

Slow blood return to the nail bed can suggest dehydration or shock

Urine Dipstick Test:

Measures specific gravity for hydration levels and ketones for malnutrition

How might we develop portable, non-invasive devices that:

1. Enable first responders to quickly and accurately assess hydration levels in the field,

&

2. Replenish fluids?

A Kit Addressing Both Needs

Seconds matter in emergency care. This early concept explored a dual-function kit: a UV scanner to swiftly locate viable veins for IV insertion and a suction device to extract fluids from the mouth for rapid assessment.

Feeling matters.

Especially for a medical device, hand-feel and overall ergonomics are essential.
